Flea cycle: Fleas do not hibernate!
You can treat and protect your pet against fleas with a number of products:
Fleas that jump on your pet are killed within 24 hours by the contact with the product. It is important that all animals in the household are treated because otherwise a flea population can still be built up in the environment. It is also possible that elsewhere in the environment is a flea infestation, or an untreated animal has been in the house. As much as 95% of the flea population is in the environment of the animal and only 5% on the animal itself.
Treatment of the environment
Reinfection from the environment is certainly likely as most fleas, eggs, larvae and pupae are in the environment.
It is also important to treat the environment with a suitable product that interrupts the flea's cycle. The environmental spray Bolfo Fleegard, based on Pyriproxyfen and Cyfluthrin, has an efficacy of 6 months against flea larvae and 2 weeks against adult fleas, if not removed by mechanical cleaning (cleaning with water). Each treatment of the environment should be preceded by thorough mopping and vacuum cleaning, where possible. The vibrations of the hoover cause the fleas to emerge from their cocoon/pupa. The pupae themselves are resistant to most treatments, but once the flea is out of its cocoon, it can be killed by an environmental spray. The flea cycle continues in the hoover bag, so don't forget to remove these as well. All rooms to which the animals have access should be treated with an environmental spray. (It is also possible that there is an outbreak of fleas somewhere outside the house).
The general advice
We recommend that all pets in the household are treated regularly against fleas. In case of severe infestations it can take 3 months or more before the flea infestation is under control, we also recommend to treat the environment with an environmental spray now. It is also important to wash all washable textiles at 60°c. Because fleas can be a vector (carrier) of tapeworms, it is advisable to de-worm your pet(s) with a product that also works against tapeworms.
